THE KAFUE TRUST
Registered English Charity No. 1067086 (1997)
Conservation and Wildlife Management, Kafue National Park, Zambia
"To see large animals going about their natural business in their own natural way, assured and unafraid,
is one of the most exciting and moving experiences in the world, comparable with the sight of a noble
building or the hearing of a great symphony or mass. A processional frieze of antelopes moving across the
African horizon rivals any theoretical spectacle. Something worthwhile to work for, something worth
preserving, something of incalculable value" Julian Huxley
The Kafue Trust is a registered English charity formed in 1997 to provide vital support for Kafue National Park (KNP) and surrounding communities. Our Mission is to moboilise professional assistance and financial resources for park management, wildlife research, training for natural resource conservation and development of sustainable livelihood enterprises. The Trust aims to assist the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to improve its operational capacity in KNP; to contribute to its management needs, to develop tourism and to enhance the well being of the local people.
In the face of a progressive decline in government budget support and the fact that donor aid will soon be ending, the enormous Park, fifth largest in the world, which with the surrounding Game Management Areas (GMAs) covers an area twice the size of Belgium, is now confronted with the challenges of escalating financial difficulty and increasing inability to carry out essential conservation and development.
The Trust owes its origin to the profound commitment of Graham Younger, who prior to his untimely passing away in 1997, was working with conservationists and ecologists to establish a charitable trust to promote wildlife conservation in and around the KNP. His work has been carried on by his sons, Tom and Mark, who through the Trust look forward to realising Graham’s dream for KNP to become well managed, self-sufficient and successful for Zambia’s enduring pride, prestige and profit. The Trust is planning to extend its activities throughout the Park with projects in the Ngoma area near Lake Itezhi-Tezhi and the Nanzhila area in the southern part of the Park which straddles the main tourist route from Livingstone to Lusaka and at Hippo Mine by the Kafue River in the north-east along the road from Mumbwa to Kasempa and to the Copperbelt.
